Persuasive Writing: Great Beginnings and Fantastic Finishers

Here are the slides for the "Great Beginnings" and "Fantastic Finishers" that we talked about this week, including my examples (in case you were absent OR if you needed to see them again). Make sure the start of your essays captures people's attention and makes them want to read more!! And make sure the ending leaves people wanting to make a change!

Remember that by Day 1, you should have an edited draft of your five paragraph essay ready for me to read over. I will help you make any other corrections before we make it into a final draft.

Please remember to...SKIP LINES!!!!

Linking Verbs

Wow, linking verbs are very confusing! I even had some trouble with them this week! Here is a GREAT website that explains when a verb is linking, and when it is action.

http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/linkingverb.htm

And check out this online quiz about linking verbs, if you need some extra practice.

http://www.softschools.com/quizzes/grammar/linking_verbs/quiz522.html

Remember, action verbs tell what the subject does.
Linking verbs tell what a subject is or is like (is, were, will be, am, etc.). Linking verbs can always be replaced by a form of is (or they already are a form of is).

Grammar Re-Test

Many students had trouble with our Parts of Speech grammar test this week. It is very important that students understand the parts of speech well, so that the new content in grammar does not get confusing.

Here are some online games/activities to helps students practice with adverbs vs. adjectives:

http://www.slidermath.com/literacy/Adverb.shtml

http://www.dowlingcentral.com/MrsD/quizzes/grammar/GammaExer/adjoradv.htm

This is a fantastic site with fun, online games for parts of speech review. Check out the other game options on the right side as well (under related activities)!

The grammar re-test will be this coming Monday (6T and 6M)/ Tuesday (6H)!

Happy studying!!

Persuasive Writing!?

This week, we started a unit on persuasive writing! Remember, persuasive writing is all about convincing or persuading people to think or do something.

Here is an example of a persuasive essay, written by a middle schooler:
